It was needed in order to make it more appealing for employers. Not many people wanted to pay off the large debts of someone when they could just hire foreign domestic workers on the cheap instead. These new laws didn’t quite turn the indentured labourers into slaves, but it was pretty damn close. Basically the only difference was they still had to be paid, they were free once their debt was up, and employers could not purposefully put an indentured servant to death. Other than that it was pretty much slavery. Their contracts could even be bought and sold. These laws made indentured servants much more attractive than regular employees for some people and the debt issue was solved and many of the rich flocked to buy and pay the debts in exchange for Slave-like workers.

Chelsea wasn’t sure how John felt about indentured servants, they had never really discussed it before when it didn’t seem like an affordable option. Now that it was though, she was determined. She had to clean the punishment room from top to bottom. The bullwhip had thrown flecks of her blood all throughout the room and the entire place had to be scrubbed clean. Anne shivered as the cheery sound of her mistress’ voice delivered her final horrifying command of the night, “oh Anne, don’t forget to clean and oil the cane and especially the bullwhip. They are covered in blood!” Anne hurried to the room. It was already midnight and she was going have to hustle to finish the task soon enough to get any sort of sleep. Her morning duties required her to start at about 6AM to have any hope of being finished in time for when her employers woke up. A single tear rolled down her cheek as she set about working on her gruesome task. Her life had become a living hell of endless toil, suffering, and servitude...It was going to be a long 7 years.
