It was H-Hour minus nine, the sun was about to set and in the morning, Nathan Maskell would be experiencing combat for the first time.

His Battalion had formed up in their assembly area, a narrow ravine, twenty miles from the Confederation border. It was an opportunity for a final orders group and to reflect on the battle to come.

The Battalion commander took the opportunity to move between the company positions to give final words of encouragement. He climbed up onto the hood of the radio wagon as Nathan and his company gathered around.

\"Men\" He Said \"you've all seen it in the news, it’s been over a week since the confederation launched a massive drone and cruise missile attack, on bases and camps throughout the disputed territory. Killing hundreds.\"

It had been pointed out by less aggressive voices inside the Republic, that the confederation had deliberately limited their strikes to the disputed territories. That various armed terrorist groups had been operating for years and some sort of confederation responsible had been inevitable. They had been shouted down though, and eventually it was decided that the peace which had lasted nearly two years would end, and the Confederation and Republic would return to war.

The Colonel paused a moment and then with a booming voice \"This is how women wage war!. They bomb and kill at a distance\" he surveyed the group and working himself up into a fury \"The confederation have driven all men and even the idea of masculinity from their territory. The very act of being a man is a crime there. They use drugs and genetic engineering to ensure that boys are never even born.\"

At dawn we cross the border, and strike deep into the confederation, we're going to take the town of Columbus, and we'll show them the consequences of their actions.\"

To the sound of cheering, the Colonel brought the battalion to attention, and then dismissed them. It took a few moments for them to regain their calm and then at the direction of their officers and Sgts, they moved off to do a final check of weapons, equipment and vehicles. As he was gathering his kit, he saw a group of new recruits crowing around one of the more seasoned soldiers. The soldier was a veteran of the last three conflicts with the confederation and was proudly displaying his trophies from those conflicts.

“Look” another soldier said pointing at the distance flashes of light and tracer were opening up at points all along the horizon.

Nathalie saw Chloe's face drop “The Republicans are rolling up the whole line, InSec were fucking warned this would happen, and those stupid ExSec bitches didn’t manage to notice them crossing the border.”

\"They'll kill everyone... \" Nathalie said horrified.

--- 0655 - The main defense line outside Columbus

“Move Forward” A voice screamed, “We need to keep moving forward!”

Nathan hugged the ground; lines of tracer were arcing through the sky. They had gotten far closer than expected before they were spotted. They had breached the minefield in several places at once, before the sentry drones behind the line started to fire.

“Come on Nathan” A figure screamed at him as he ran past.

Nathan let his rifle drop to his side, it was no use against a drone, he kept expecting to be shot by the infantry that should have been providing overwatch for the drone, but nothing came. He pulled a grenade from a pouch, flicked a switch that set it to Anti-Armour , and lobbed it gently onto the deck of the drone. Luckily for him it landed flush and its explosive power directed down into the drone, or it would have killed him as well.

He was past the drone now, and inside the trench line of the confederation position, it was unoccupied, they must have fallen back to a different position.

He put his head over the parapet back the way he came, and waved a signal flag to show he was in the position, other troops dived into the trench.

“It’s clear!” Nathan shouted.

They fanned out, looking for any signs of the defending troops.
“Cease fire” A voice shouted, “Position secured!”

For the next few minutes, the Company spread out, they had secured all their objectives on the first attempt, as he looked into the distance he could see fire from the distance and realised the main element had gotten into the town already.

Someone tapped him on the shoulder and told him the Company commander wanted to see him. As he made his way to the command post, he heard a burst of fire, then shouts “OUT…. GET THE FUCK OUT YOU BITCHES….”
