I expected David, my former son-in-law, to still be wallowing when I rang the bell. He squirmed, trying to shift his hips away, but there was nowhere to go—trapped between my body and the arm of the loveseat. I could see the outline of him now, thick and straining against the denim, a wet spot already blooming at the tip.

When my thumb finally brushed the swollen head, he jerked as if electrocuted, a strangled sound escaping his throat.
