“A dragon,\nmaster? Dragon’s aren’t real.”

He rubbed\nher lips, laughing. “You mindless little cunt. Of course they’re real. They\ncome down from the mountains to the north. Horrible, fire-breathing lizards. A\nsingle one would barely fit in that great hall of yours.”

“Can they\nfly? Like in the stories.”

“You fought\none?” she asked, so amazed she forget his honorific.

He smiled.\n“Aye. Me and eleven other knights. Alphonse, Gastogne, Balmeric, Kain – some of\nthe finest in the kingdom. We killed it too. Eventually.”

\n\n

Eve tried to\nimagine, but it sounded impossible. She knew dragons had existed, the histories\nwere filled with them, but why had no one ever told her they still did? Then\nagain, she realized, why would they? She was a slave, no one ever told her\nanything.

\n\n

Still, it\nwas hard to picture. A dragon – breathing fire and beating scaly wings. Twelve\nknights in full armor circling around. She had fully expected\nto live and die without ever setting foot outside her father’s domain. But here\nwas someone who fought in far flung places across the kingdom. She tried to\nreconcile this with the man who had beaten her earlier. She was surprised at\nhow simple she found it. She had been told her entire life that great men have\ngreat appetites. Some of the tortures the king, or the great knights of old,\ninflicted on their slaves were the stuff of legend. She was more surprised he\nhadn’t done worse to her.

\n\n

Moldred\ncontinued talking as she thought. “You would love it. The crowds, the\nexcitement, the fights. I suppose you wouldn’t understand the fights, but\nstill. It’s incredible.”

\n\n

“This cunt\ncould understand them,” she said, only realizing after the words left her mouth\nthat she had just contradicted her master. Luckily, he laughed it off.

“And what do\nyou know about duels, cunt?”

He gripped\nher tighter. “You’ve never seen a dragon. Fair, I suppose. I don’t know why I\nwould have expected different honestly. But that dragon we killed, it had green\neyes. Your eyes remind me of those.”

Eve found\nherself touching the area under her eye, smiling despite herself. She didn’t\nknow why being compared to a large lizard made her feel good, but it did.

“So, for\nyour name. I’m thinking Dragon’s Eye.” He paused, and Eve fought the urge to\nspeak out of turn, and tell him what she thought of that name. “No,” he\nfinally, blessedly, said. “Too long.” He ran his hand over her, fondling her\nbreasts. “Fire Snatch.”

Eve stared\ninto his strong, brown eyes, feeling weaker than she ever had in her life. She\nhad felt powerless before, but never like this. His hand was so close to her\nshe could feel the warmth of it. If he had hit her, at that speed, with that\nstrength, she would have died before she realized what was happening. “Master,”\nshe said, her voice soft, shaky. “It wouldn’t be much of a competition if you\ndid.”

\n\n

He grinned,\nand his crest faded away. “Fair enough. No crest.” He took a few steps back.\n“Gash, keep time. And count us off. On three.”

\n\n

He stared at\nher, arms by his sides, not taking her seriously. Eve, took a deep breath. Her\nheart didn’t slow, but she could at least focus. As she did, she felt the anger\nrising in her again. She could handle the abuse, the humiliation. But she was\nsick of everyone treating her like a joke. Maybe he could kill her with barely\na thought with his crest, but what could he do without it? If she had that kind\nof power, she’d never stop using it. Maybe he was the same. Maybe he couldn’t\nfight without it. She crouched low, watching him.

Gash\ncounted, “One, two, three.”

Moldred\ndashed forward, his arms wide. Eve moved towards him, tumbling to the side at\nthe last second. He grabbed it and\npulled. In that instant she saw his face, and the wild smile that was on it.
