Jessica woke up covered in sweat, groggy and smelling of burnt oranges, the tell tale reek of cheap anesthesia patches. She had no recollection of time passing. Cryogenic incarceration left her with misfiring nerves that spasmed uncontrollably.

Her senses were still muted for the most part but she could tell that she was nude on some kind of hospital gurney. Too nauseous to feel embarrassed, she was simply glad to be free of the Uniform and Collar that had been her unwanted companions throughout her defense process. It had made her feel dehumanized like some sort of dangerous animal in front of the very people she needed to empathize with her.

As a newly minted adult and Citizen, she'd gone through all the motions and appeals before reluctantly submitting to Cryo storage. Her family spared no expense but ultimately she'd been saddled with a Capital conviction and a punishment date. Her poor mother fainted when the severity level was raised to the death penalty.

A heavy clunking sound distracted her from morbid thoughts. Cool air washed over her, shivering she realized her skin was becoming hyper sensitive. It was already a little too red, and upon further inspection, completely devoid of body hair. In fact even the hair on her head. Her beautiful auburn locks were scraped away.

A wave of intense loss swept through her. She hadn't had less than shoulder length hair since the bubblegum incident in kindergarten. That was more than 15 years ago!

As more cool air pushed in, a group of nurses in mint green uniforms, faceless in protective gear, suddenly surrounded her. They gave no greetings and certainly didn't ask permission before examining her. Her vitals were taken and her questions ignored. They poked and prodded her until she felt like a slab of meat. She'd thought her personal dignity died at the Holding Facility but there was just enough to flush her with shame.

Her muscles were still mostly unresponsive even as she felt a slimy poke and the burning sensation of a lubricated Foley catheter sliding up her urethra. They inflated the retaining balloon with sterile water while taping a bag to her inner thigh. The filling bag was the only warmth until they finished up with a sheet thrown over her body.

As they moved her to a padded cell, they continued to move precisely and without a single word aloud. God how she hated subtotal implants. What ever happened to normal human conversation? It was even worse knowing the local A.I. was doubtlessly whispering orders directly into their brains while they subvocalized to one another. Big Brother indeed.

The line of thought made Jessica grimace as she remembered it was this line of thinking that helped introduce her to the Bio Resistance Alliance on campus. Oh how clever the group of young collegiate women thought themselves. Their professor was the cleverest of them all, a leader in her field and the club. They were going to make a difference, unfortunately it all got over complicated too quickly.

Shooting, tingling pains signaled the slow return of feeling to Jessica's limbs. Heedless of cramps, she began a slow yogic routine and breathing pattern. It took time but she was able to ride out the rejuvenation process.

Eventually, bored and alone, she received word from her lawyer. Mr. Evans informed her that he and her family were on their way. He also assured her he was working around the clock, pulling every string and lever to help her.

A large dose of guilt, shame, and fear welled in her gut alongside a tiny ray of hope. The potent cocktail of emotions made her ill. Instead of dwelling overmuch she tried to query the local A.I. aloud. Acknowledging its presence for the first time. It guilelessly offered an incredible range of meal options. Surely she could overdo it on their dime right? Of course she quickly glossed over the reasons she wouldn't exactly have to watch her figure anymore.

The shrink and chaplain visited a short time later in the middle of her extravagant surf and turf. Not only could she not force down more than a few nibbles, but she realized they were both nothing more than hard light projections. She threw an absolute, possibly childish, tantrum. Could they truly care so little to leave her mental wellness in the claws of the A.I.?

Instead she opted for an awkward shower in a side room under watch by two nurses and the oppressive eye of the artificial mind. Not having hair made bathing surprisingly easy, she even allowed herself a moment to be envious of men.

Finally clean, she was shortly back in isolation alone with her ghosts. After a while she pushed down her pride and accepted a sedative. She dreamed for the first time in months, dreaming of home.

Jessica awoke to being manhandled into a wheelchair by several nurses. She was always grumpy when awoken early and they had to use the nylon flex restraints to secure her. The drug made her a bit wobbly still, so maybe the added restraint vest holding her upright wasn't such a bad thing.

It wasn't a long journey through the well lit hallways. Everything seemed to have an ugly green themed shade of identification in these particular halls. The smells of rubber and antiseptic were pervasive. It reminded her of an old hospital she knew.

Soon they entered a room that looked like a media studio. They actually said a few words to her and let her slip into a surprisingly nice deep green dress with slippers. She teared up when they gave her a wig that looked uncannily like her own hair.

She didn't know that it was, in fact, her own hair. Policy held that in the absence of major disciplinary issues, individuals were to be allowed certain amenities to ease the process along. Not until the vault was sealed would ownership of such personal effects pass to the family.

In short order they led her to a room with a microphone and an old fashioned digital camera to record final statements, witness official signatures, and record final images. The pictures taken portrayed her as desperately hopeful. Her statements began with fervent justifications and rage, but melted into emotional apologies. She even attempted an awkward goodbye.

Despite all the waterworks, she still nurtured a sliver of hope. That sliver grew since her lawyer told her that oftentimes the youngest offenders got clemency at the so-called 11th hour. It saved a young life and instilled a lifelong lesson. She was a perfect candidate!

After the recording a nurse unlike any other bustled in. Her eye watering ly pink scrubs set her apart from all the sickly greens. It was also the first time someone tried to talk to her instead of barking orders.

Her name was Sarah….something and she had an intense manic energy about her. She was nearly as pale as herself but with a full head of dirty blonde hair and a Borderland accent she kept trying and failing to hide.

Sarah talked like she needed to make up for the yawning silence of the entire facility. She sat Jessica back in the wheelchair and pushed her right across the hall into a gynecological exam room. Sarah talked about the overcast weather, the difference between local wines, she spoke of a festival opening soon and maybe Jessica's family might like to check it out, she even mentioned her cat!

Jessica was dumbfounded by the verbal assault after all the isolation. She was the one unable to respond now, but it actually felt nice to get lost in the meaningless chatter for a little while. While talking Sarah also worked diligently. She asked Jessica to remain calm. If she promised to be good and calm, Sarah promised to keep any discomfort to a minimum.

Jessica nodded mutely and Sarah forged ahead. She easily found the seams in the dress and pulled velcro Jessica didn't know about until the dress fell away easily. She then helped her out of the slippers, onto the exam table, and into the stirrups.

“Okay hun open wide! No! Just your mouth silly!”

Face-burning, Jessica opened her mouth for Sarah to fit a specially molded mouth guard over her teeth and told her to bite down to stick her teeth in place. It filled her mouth, suppressed her tongue, and even had a reinforced rubber tube through the center that allowed for continued breathing. A wide rubber shield went over her lips above the chin and below the nose. It took some work but once it was fully seated Jessica knew she'd need help or a pliers to pry the mouth filling gag out.

As Sarah continued to work to adjust the guard, a few regular nurses filed in. Jessica nearly panicked but Sarah's touch and babble became a comforting stream.

“Okay dear, we're going to slip your wrists into these here soft cuffs. We use them in hospitals all the time to keep patients from messing up the equipment. It's totally normal and you'll still have a little reach if you need to signal us. Has anyone ever told you you have lovely smooth skin? Personally I use a two in one lotion, thick as summer honey….”, and so on.

The cuffs were indeed soft, nothing like the handcuffs or heavy leather restraints. One nurse began rubbing an oil into her skin with her latex gloves glistening, while another pair of nurses tipped her forward to wrap a shiny flex steel belt around her waist. She nearly jumped when she felt the fabric beneath her lift up and cradle her in a sling to an overhead crane like lift. Her restraints had swapped to the slings edges without her realizing it and soon she was totally off the table like a bundle over a vagrant's shoulder. She watched as Sarah used a remote to guide her journey along tracks on the ceiling. At least the incredible pressure on her lower body eased somewhat as she swayed in the sling.

More cool air greeted them as she and their little group passed slowly into a much larger adjoining room. She could feel goosebumps prickle as she took in the multiple curtained off areas and noise.

The room was already quite busy with people in scrubs and rubber or plastic aprons pushing carts or fiddling with odd machines. Despite all of them, the only voice she could hear clearly was Sarah's. And in this room even Sarah lowered her voice somewhat.

The room itself was physically shaped like a hexagon with adjustable surgery lights all along the ceiling. Half the walls were taken up with incomprehensible machinery and the other half were covered in enormous mirrors. Jessica carefully averted her eyes from the mirrors.

The forward central area was partially blocked off by three sets of thick shiny curtains in light green. She could just make out multiple shadows moving about. Sarah was leading their coterie toward the set at the farthest end. Jessica felt her heart rate increase at what might be over there.

As they approached, more and more heads turned their way. They were clearly trying to remain professional but Jessica knew she must look positively ridiculous.

“Ooo! Looks like my team's first to the party Anya!”, Sarah gushed to a tall platinum blonde in dark scrubs.

Anya's eyes narrowed slightly, “Stay focused Miss Hayes, you never know who's judging.”, replied Anya in a curt Eastern accent.

“Don't be a buzz killer Anya! We've been ready for months now!”

Anya simply nodded once then both sets of eyes landed on Jessica. For the first time she felt like Sarah was viewing her differently, like a butcher sees a slab of meat. Then her face cleared and she was back to her manic bubbly self.

Jessica had no time to consider it as the curtains slipped aside to allow them in. Inside was a raised stage with four new nurses all staring at her. Her muscles tensed and her vision went blurry as she processed the dominating presence of an enormous over sized chair bolted to the stage before her.
